Michael and his Ooma Tessoro

in The Berkshires of Massachusetts

The first batch of Ooma Tesoro's Marinara Sauce was made in our kitchen in Windsor, MA, but it really started with Michael's grandmother – whom he lovingly called “Ooma” – in her Brooklyn kitchen. But before even that, the Tesoro family was making the sauce for generations in Avellino, Italy. The recipe, made with few but intensely flavorful ingredients, has been passed down in our family and now we’re sharing it with you.

Our founder Michael made his Ooma’s marinara for friends and family for years, then wooed his wife Robin with it. One night when the couple was making sauce they realized just how many people told them over the years, “this is a nice sauce, you should jar it.” They jarred the first batch soon after that and knew they had something special: A sauce that tastes like your grandmother made it, one that is smooth and flavorful in texture, and one that has no preservatives or added sugar. The one jarred sauce that tastes like homemade.

Michael and Robin took a leap of faith and began selling their sauce. First at farmers' markets in Massachusetts, and soon after that, Ooma Tesoro's premium marinara sauce made its way to grocery store shelves in New England.

Ooma Tesoro's keeps it simple – it’s made with just a few of the finest U.S. grown ingredients:

  • vine-ripened plum tomatoes

  • extra-virgin olive oil

  • fresh onions

  • fresh garlic

  • sea salt and herbs

We handcraft each batch in The Berkshires of Western MA, and in our Ooma Tesoro’s Premium Marinara Sauce, our grandmother’s legacy lives on.

“A jar of marinara sauce can’t be closer to homemade than this one. It is made with tomatoes, onions, olive oil, garlic, pepper, sea salt, herbs and spices, just the way Michael Tesoro’s grandmother did it.” — Florence Fabricant, The New York Times
